Dem Corps Scholarship Recipients for 2007

Danielle L. Dubuc of Lewiston - "Danielle lives with her parents in Lewiston.  She will be attending Boston College and majoring in Nursing."

Laura B. Hand of Kennebunkport - "Laura is planning to attend Brandeis University where she will study International Relations, Anthropology and Spanish.  While at Kennebunk High School Laura has been an active member of "Peer Helpers", Jazz Band, Swimming, and Track and Field.

Laura is also an accomplished pianist and has played in the pit orchestra in several school musicals.  She is also a member of the National Honor Society.  Outside of school Laura teaches piano and volunteers at her church."

Kerianne Tripp of Saco - Kerianne is an intelligent and high-achieving student at Thornton Academy who is active and involved in her school and her community. She participates in athletics like cross-country and track; plays the French horn in band, jazz band and marching band; performs with the drama group TA Players, Treble Choir, Chamber Singers and school plays; and is an active member of National Honor Society.
Tripp balances rigorous academic pursuits with volunteering much of her time. Most notably, she has had a variety of leadership roles in the local and state chapters of International Organization of Rainbow Girls (IORG), a service-based organization that develops character, faith and charity. IORG has allowed her to organize meetings, give presentations, plan charitable events and lead the Rainbow Girls choir. In addition, Tripp volunteers with other groups like Relay for Life, the Evergreen Nursing Home in Saco, and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Sarah McDonough of Biddeford - "Sarah McDonough is an outstanding social science student receiving excellent assessments in all of her courses she has completed.  She has been enrolled in the courses of Intro to Social Science, Geography, American Studies, Global Studies, Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Sociology.  Sarah will be an exceptional college student.

She is presently enrolled at the University of New England in an English Writing course entitled, Freedom and Authority.  Her commitment to excellence in her approach to academics is exceptional.  She governs herself with the highest moral standards and is known for her honesty and integrity amongst faculty and peers.

As a member of Interact she has participated in various community service activities.  Sarah will be the first member of her family to attend college.  She recognizes the value that post-secondary education can bring to a person's life.  The support she has lent her brothers and parents is very unusual and demonstrates her maturity and caring nature."

Elizabeth Hains of Portland - "Elizabeth Hains is an intelligent, responsible and involved young lady who has experienced much success at Portland High School. What belies this seemingly serious and quiet student is a person who is passionate about some causes and issues; more importantly, Elizabeth has the dedication and organizational skills to turn these passions into substantial contributions.

She has been the treasurer of our Environmental Club for two years. The club’s activities have included organizing a school wide recycling program, preparing a study for school wide savings on energy use, and presenting the study to our school board. The scope of the club has included global causes as well; members have organized fund-raising activities for the Feed the Hungry Organization and for buying and planting trees.

Elizabeth has also been instrumental in starting up a Photography Club. She has been a member of Key Club for two years; as such, she has volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House and has assisted in an after school elementary school program. Elizabeth has also written letters of advocacy for causes through the Amnesty Club. Her goals are to study public policy and history. Elizabeth is the kind of student I’d like to reconnect with in ten years; based on what she’s contributed at Portland High School, I anticipate that she will be a real mover and shaker."
